Brownfields and Urban Agriculture

Definitions

Best Management Practices (BMPS)
Practices or measures that have been proven to be effective and practical in achieving an objective.

Brownfield
"…real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant."

CSA
Community Supported Agriculture, a CSA consist of individuals and/or groups of people who support a local farming operation by buying a membership or "share" in the operation. The "share" usually consists of a box of fresh, seasonal fruits or vegetables that is delivered or picked up on a weekly basis.

Food Desert
A food desert is any area where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain. Food deserts occur in rural as well as urban areas and are most often associated with low-socioeconomic minority communities, where the only source of food may be a convenience store. According to the 2000 census, there are 23.5 million U.S. residents in low income neighborhoods who live more than 1 mile from a grocery store.
